If you’re looking for a weekend family break, then I highly
recommend a trip to Legoland. We were
going to go all out and head for the original in Denmark, but given that we had
never left the country with all three children in tow and that the two-year old
is the consummate Duracell bunny, we decided that maybe Windsor was a safer bet
and we weren’t disappointed. We fly to
Heathrow with Aer Lingus early on Friday morning, with huge excitement for said
two-year old, who watched the clouds and entertained half the plane with his
antics. We took a Black Cab from
Heathrow right to the Legoland hotel door to make life easy on ourselves and
there were genuine gasps of delight as we pulled up outside the brightly
coloured building. These turned to shrieks when we entered reception and the
kids had unfettered access to a big Lego pit and Mr. Two-year old went to
introduce himself to the life size Lego Ninjago doorman! We also learned that
there are over 6,000 mini figs glued onto the reception desk.
We had booked a Pirate themed room for our two-night stay
and it was super. We were greeted with a
map and the children had to figure out the clues to unlock a treasure chest,
which held a small Lego surprise for each of them. There was loads of space in the family room,
with the kids sleeping area being separate than the adults and with their own
TV. So, there was no need for shushed
conversations between myself and my husband, in that usual don’t move a muscle
for fear of walking the kid’s hotel stay way.
We headed out to the park pretty much straight away and
started to explore. First up was the
live show and of course my two older ones were straight in to volunteer to be
part of it, so they got to fire water cannons at the Lego Pirate and help
rescue the golden sword. Once they had dried off, we went on a laser quest with
the Pharaohs. We took a train ride, the kids got their Driver’s Permits in the
mini city. Over the two days we managed to take in all of the rides, without too
much time sent queuing. Definitely recommend a term time visit. Rollercoasters,
water rides, swimming pools, puppet shows, cinema, building workshops – there’s something for everyone. My favourite
was the craftsmanship of the replica buildings at Mini Land and the Starwars
exhibition. The park also do stroller hire, a necessity for Day 2!
In the evening after eating all we could at the hotel All
You Can Eat Buffet, the kids were entertained by a Ninja skills session and
disco. We took a bus into Windsor one evening for a bite to eat and a stroll
around the castle and then relaxed back at the hotel bar while the kids watched
movies and took part in a Lego building competition. Action packed, high
energy, family fun. To quote a very famous Lego Movie – everything is awesome –
on repeat!
